A 1,200-bed hospital in Beijing has been sealed off because of the rapidly-spreading Sars virus, according to a report by the Reuters news agency.

The virus sweeping Asia has so far claimed at least 252 lives.

Police were posted outside the University People's Hospital to stop people entering or leaving, hospital staff said.

The hospital, which has about 2,300 staff, was sealed off around 1am Thursday (1700 GMT Wednesday), they said.

"There are policemen and security guards standing outside," one staff member said.

I'm guessing earthquakes won't be far behind.

I like the drama of The Stand better than the The Laci Peterson Story.

I still don't think this will reach critical mass here in the states but Bejing is not looking too good right now.

I'd be interested in your rationale for feeling this won't break out in the US. I want to believe you're right, give me a reason for hoping so.

Thanks,

It will get even worse out in the countryside where they have very poor health systems, and very illiterate populations.

I believe Bush will have the guts to do what is necessary in the case of this disease. Singapore and Hong Kong seem to be controlling this disease to controllable levels under much worse conditions than there is anywhere except in NYC. We don't have the mass public transportation (except in the North East) and crowded living conditions (especially like Hong Kong and China). The vast majority of the country commutes in their own vehicle and does not live in huge population densities. What we consider crowded here is nothing compared to these locales that seem to be controlling the numbers.

I am not saying this will make America immune. It just is not as fertile a ground for an epidemic of this type.

Pray I am right. If I am wrong you may not be around to gloat.

I just don't think so. I think major urban centers with high population densities are the major threat

Don't get me wrong - I do NOT want to gloat at all. I am just curious as to how others are appraising this virus.

Thanks for your response. I think it has some merit.

Actually, there is a really interesting tin foil theory out there somewhere which basically says it was manufactured in China to take down the economy and sound a warning to any NWO plans following Iraq.....and that it is not meant to spread through this country..... Dunno.... but I DO know that I saw a wire story earlier which troubled me greatly, because it appears that SARS has made an appearance in India, and THAT'S a scary thought.

Beijing 1,200-bed hospital sealed off due to SARS

BEIJING, April 24 (Reuters) - The 1,200-bed Beijing University People's Hospital was sealed off because of SARS on Thursday and police were posted to stop people going in or out, hospital staff said.

The hospital, which has about 2,300 staff, was sealed off at around 1 a.m. on Thursday (1700 GMT on Wednesday), they said.

"No one is allowed to enter or leave," one staff member told Reuters by telephone. "There are policemen and security guards standing outside."

there was an ER episode where they sealed off the hospital. it wasn't long before people started freaking out which I think is pretty realistic.

sars makes a better weapon than small pox because at least with small pox we had a vaccination.

this is going to be the straw that breaks the airlines because I think the spread of this disease is going to get much worse.
I sure am not flying anywhere.

His logic is that of a person who has fallen off a tall building and, passing the 22nd floor is heard to mutter. "So far, so good."

BREAKING NEWS:

TOYOTA HAS JUST ANNOUNCED THAT THEY WILL PULL OUT ALL JAPANESE STAFF AND THEIR FAMILY MEMBERS. ONLY ONE JAPANESE EXECUTIVE WILL REMAIN IN BEIJING TO ACT AS LIASON.

The poor guy must have drawn the short straw.

11B3 is right.

If just one person infected with SARS is on any of the countless trains now leaving Beijing, these trains could significantly increase the speed of the spread of SARS throughout China's interior. (600 persons/train)

The tragic irony of this exodus is that everyone leaving Beijing hopes to avoid getting SARS there, but they will in all likelihood contract and spread it throughout the country, to strangers, friends and family.
